Frequently Asked Questions
The Noise Devizes – Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register?
Yes please! We need you to register. There are forms for all ages and groups or if you are an individual over 18 you can register online. This is for insurance purposes and so you know that you know what you’re signing up for. Have a read of a sample 'volunteer declaration.
And practically, it’s a massive task allocating volunteers to different Noise projects and events. It really helps us if you get registered early. Please don’t leave it to the last minute… :)
What are the age restrictions for Noise volunteers?
We love to encourage people of all ages to get involved in The Noise!
Noise volunteers can register as a Family Team or as part of a Youth Group Team. You just need to make sure you meet the adult/child ratio, have parental consent (where applicable) and have signed up to the specific volunteer declarations.
Individual volunteers under 18 (but over 16) must have parental consent. There is no upper age limit for individual volunteers! Under 16s must be part of a Family Team or a Youth Group Team.
Why do I have to pay?
The Noise Devizes is an outreach of St James’ Church, Devizes which is a registered charity. We do not make a profit from what we do! The registration fee goes towards making the projects and events of the weekend happen. That might be covering the cost of your nice blue Noise t-shirt, paying for a bit of a bouncy castle, buying a scone or two for a community tea, or paying or a bit of a big bag to take away all the rubbish. We make sure it goes to good use and helps fulfil the vision of The Noise Devizes which is to ‘show God’s love in practical ways.’
Do I have to do all the days?
No, it’s totally up to you how many days you volunteer for, just check the appropriate boxes on the registration form. And if you can only make part of a day, that’s fine too! Just make sure you tell us that on the registration form.
Can I change which day(s) I do?
Yes, you can. If you need to make a change after you’ve registered just let The Noise Devizes office know as soon as possible.
Can I do The Noise Devizes with my friends?
Definitely! We love to see people doing The Noise Devizes together with their friends, work colleagues, churches or small groups. You’ll need to let our Noise Administrator know who you want to work with so send them a note giving the names of up to 10 people and we’ll try put you on a project together.
Can I choose what area I work in and what I’m doing?
This year, The Noise Devizes will be working mainly in our parish so there may not be a great deal of choice about where you work – but we hope that in the future, we’ll spread all over town! If you have a preference for what sort of things you enjoy doing or are experienced in there is a place on the form to say that, or do let us know. We do our best to accommodate requests, but we also need to take into consideration volunteer numbers and needs in each community.
Why do you work in some areas and not others?
The Noise Bristol, which is where we have taken our inspiration from, started small with 30 volunteers working in Lockleaze in 2001, and since then has grown slowly and relationally over the last 10 or so years, to around 1000 volunteers working in different communities in North Bristol and East Bristol in 2016.
The Noise Devizes is committed to the town of Devizes as a whole. Our longer term vision is to keep growing and seeking opportunities to serve communities across the town. At the same time The Noise Devizes holds on to its model of growing slowly and relationally, and being aware of its capacity both financially and structurally.
We would love to hear from you if you are interested in seeing The Noise, or Noise projects happen in your local community.
What do I need to wear?
It’s a good idea to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We’d also recommend that you wear closed/sturdy shoes (not flip flops!). If you already have a Noise t-shirt please wear that, or else pick one up at the registration venue on the weekend itself. If at all possible, please ensure your Noise t-shirt can be seen at all times (but we realise you might need coats on if it’s wet).
Is there anything I need to bring with me?
Be prepared for the weather, so bring waterproofs and/or sunscreen. You may want to bring a change of clothes. Also bring your own lunch/snacks to eat during the day, and something to drink – or money to buy some.
I don’t have transport, is that a problem?
Hopefully not. The Noise Devizes 2016 does not cover a huge area, so you shouldn’t require transport to get between venues/projects. If you don’t have transport but need a lift, there are usually other lovely Noise volunteers who are willing to offer lifts. If you have any concerns, do get in touch.
What if it rains?
You may get a little bit wet! The Noise Devizes keeps on going whatever the weather. There are some outdoor projects that we may need to cancel/re-arrange, but most things can happen in the rain. We will assess things on a day to day basis over the weekend and follow our health and safety policies. But don’t let a bit of rain put you off!
Are there more opportunities to do Noise Devizes projects at other times of the year?
This is just our second year of The Noise Devizes. In 2016 we will have a whole weekend in October, but also one day of projects on 14th May. We hope that as time goes on, we can expand our Noisiness, but for the time being we have links with other organisations all over Devizes who work in the community working in our town and may be able to put you in touch with them. Keep an eye on our website throughout the year and we’ll put any volunteering opportunities we become aware of on it.
If you have any other questions, please do get in touch!
Thanks for being a part of The Noise Devizes 2016!
